Insider trading – UBS compliance officer - 3 years imprisonment sentence

In June 2019, Fabiana Abdel – Malek, a former UBS compliance officer and Walid Choucair, her trader friend were both convicted after an 8 week trial by a London court of insider trading and been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. UBS is a Swiss multinational investment bank and financial services company founded and based in Switzerland. The Financial Conduct Authority had been investigating the case for over 4 years.  This is the first insider trading case to be successfully prosecuted in the UK in the last 3 years.  Malek passed on confidential tips on deals that UBS was working on but she did not receive any money for passing this information on.  Her barrister said about Malek that “At the age of 36, now, her career is at an end.  She has gained very little and lost a lot.”
